William Thomas Stead (1849-1912), said a prominent
American, came closer to governing Great Britain in the years 1884 through 1888 than any other one man in the kingdom.
Such recognition overshadows Stead’s foresight and considerable contributions to humanity, which is the emphasis of this book by Professor Grace Eckley,
the first full-length W.T. Stead biography since 1925.
William Thomas Stead was also an unwavering promoter of world peace, and a staunch supporter for the development of the mental sciences.
An innovative editor, he believed in the power of
journalism to improve the world. His landmark
‘Maiden Tribute’ series in 1885 effectively
achieved passage of Britain’s first law for
protection of women and children.
He introduced section titles, interviews, signed articles, and illustrations. He started Civic Centres, initiated baby adoption, a circulating library, a method for school children to learn languages, a marriage bureau, Penny Novels, and led numerous peace crusades.
And even in his last breath, he again made headlines. He died on the Titanic.
